Rogue Combat Guide
At low level gear you should preferably use the assassination built. Once you reach a certain gear level, combat becomes really effective, specially when you reach the Armor Penetration cap. It might require a little more of skill and thinking than Assassination, since you will have to adapt to the fight and maybe improvise a little.
Stats & Gemming
Expertise cap: 216 (or 26 in your character menu)
Hit Rating: 315 (+ Precision talent), the more you have, the less you will miss, but reaching the cap is a DPS loss, since it's too high.
Crit Cap: It's around 65% but if you are raiding stop getting more at 58-60%, because with the buffs you will get you will reach the cap
Haste: Haste isn't a priority for combat rogues, so don’t try to stack it.
AP: It’s always good to have more damage on your swings and abilities so AP is always a good stat to have, but you should in priority get the ArP/Hit/Expertise cap before getting more agility.
ArP: Since most of your damage as combat rogue will be physical this stat is really good. Try to reach the cap (100%= 1400 ArP), but without losing the expertise or hit cap.
Once your Gear allows you to reach at least 45% ArP, then you should think about this gemming:
Meta: Relentless Earthsiege Diamond
Blue: 1 Nightmare Tear, rest Fractured Cardinal Ruby (20 ArP)
Red: Fractured Cardinal Ruby (20 ArP)
Yellow: Fractured Cardinal Ruby (20 ArP), unless you reach 100% ArP without gemming in this slot. In that case get Hit Rating gems until you reach the cap.
Glyphs should be included but just in case, these are the best Combat rogues glyphs:
-Glyph of Sinister Strike (50% chance to add another combo point with SS)
-Glyph of Eviscerate (10% more Critical chance with Eviscerate)
-Glyph of Killing Spree (reduces it’s cooldown by 45 sec, allowing you to use it more in a fight)
There is only one viable combat built. Talents that can be discussed about are Hack and Slash if you are using other types of weapons, then you can switch to mace specialization, even if the best weapons for combat rogues are swords and axes. Combat with daggers isn't a good choice.
The Idea is to have a slow Main Hand (around 2,4/2,8) and a fast Off Hand (1,8/1,4). Use Instant Poison on your slow Main Hand and Deadly Poison on your fast Off Hand.
1) Use Sinister Strike until you reach 5 CP, then use Slice and Dice
2) Sinister Strike again until 5 Cp and use Eviscerate.
3) Repeat. Use Killing spree every time you can and when you are out of energy. Use Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry together and I recommend using it or on the start to try using it a second time in the fight, or with BL.
Use ToT on the Main Tank to give him aggro, or on another rogue that casts it on you, in order not to give someone a too big aggro. If you have the T10 (2) Bonus, this can be a welcomed source of energy.
There are some fights where I recommend not using Killing Spree, because of the map, where you can fall through the floor due to some bugs. These fights are the fights of Lord Marrowgar, Professor Putricide (near the table), Blood Prince Council (near the stairs), Blood-Queen (near the stairs), Sindragosa (because you can never stay on her back or she will tail swip you). I have never tried on the LK fight but I don’t think there should be any problem unless LK is turning his back to the void, in which case you will fall if you use it.
